Chapter 12 - The Reckoning|

The name Thomas Carter hung in the cold warehouse air like a sudden frost.

Salvatore’s face went pale for half a second before his trained political mask snapped back into place. "I don't know any Thomas Carter."

"You knew him three years ago, Uncle," Luca said softly, leaning his hands flat on the steel table. "He was the mechanic who serviced my wife's Lincoln three hours before Ashwood Bridge collapsed."

The nine captains sat up straight, their eyes darting nervously between Luca and Salvatore.

"That crash was a structural accident!" Salvatore snapped, slamming his silver cane against the floor. "The city police closed that investigation three years ago!"

"The city police closed it because you paid Captain Vance fifty thousand dollars to alter the forensic report," Hannah spoke up, her voice clear, strong, and completely devoid of fear as she stepped forward to the table.

Salvatore glared at her with pure, unadulterated hatred. "Shut your mouth, girl!"

"Rocco," Luca ordered quietly. "Open the briefcase."

Rocco flipped the silver latches of the leather briefcase, pulling out a stack of original financial ledgers, wire transfer receipts, and a small, silver thumb drive.

"These are the original bank records from your offshore account in the Cayman Islands, Sal," Luca revealed, pointing to the documents. "Dated August 12th—the day after the crash. A ten-thousand-dollar cash withdrawal to Thomas Carter, followed by a two-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer from the Genovese family in New York."

The captains gasped in shock.

"Treason!" old Captain Bruno shouted, pointing at Salvatore. "He took Genovese money to sabotage the Don's car!"

Salvatore’s face turned into a mask of frantic, ugly terror. He backed away from the table, his hand reaching inside his pinstripe jacket for his hidden weapon.

Before Salvatore could pull his gun, Luca had already drawn a heavy tactical pistol from his coat, pointing the barrel directly between his uncle's eyes from two feet away.

"Don't," Luca whispered softly.
