Chapter 11 - The Dockland Gathering|

At seven-thirty the following morning, fog hung heavy over Pier 19—the nerve center of the Moretti family's illegal logistics operations along the Chicago River.

Inside a sprawling, soundproof warehouse overlooking the dark water, nine regional captains sat around a long steel table.

At the head of the table sat Salvatore Moretti—sixty-two years old, silver-haired, dressed in an expensive pinstripe suit, leaning on a heavy silver-topped cane.

"Luca has lost his mind, gentlemen," Salvatore declared smoothly to the assembled captains, sipping espresso from a china cup. "He brought a diner waitress into his private estate last night. He's letting a child's spontaneous muscle spasm dictate our shipping strategy while our Brooklyn routes lose two hundred thousand dollars a day."

The captains muttered among themselves, several nodding in agreement.

"Luca spent three years sitting beside a wheelchair," Salvatore pressed on, leaning forward. "He is weak. Under Section Eight of the Moretti charter, I move to assume interim leadership of the terminals."

"Seconded," an old captain named Bruno chimed in.

The heavy steel doors at the far end of the warehouse blew open with a deafening metallic crash.

Luca Moretti walked into the warehouse.

He wore a tailored dark suit, his broad shoulders squared, his gray eyes sweeping over the captains like an executioner assessing condemned men.

Walking directly beside him, wearing a simple navy dress, her chin held high, her dark red hair pinned back, was Hannah Carter.

Behind them walked Rocco, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

The nine captains went completely silent. Salvatore’s coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth, his sharp eyes narrowing as he recognized the woman standing beside his nephew.

"Luca," Salvatore sneered, setting his cup down. "What is the meaning of this circus? Why is this servant in our council room?"

Luca walked to the head of the table, stopping three feet from his uncle.

"This servant," Luca declared, his deep voice echoing off the steel beams like a bell, "is Hannah Carter. The daughter of Thomas Carter."
