Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL IN THE WHEELCHAIREight-year-old Addie Miller had been waiting for this day for months.

She had decorated her wheelchair with blue ribbons, silver stars, and a small American flag.

Her father, Daniel, had helped her attach every decoration.

“Do you like it?” he asked.

Addie smiled.

“It looks like a parade car.”

Daniel smiled back.

“That’s exactly what it is.”

Addie had dreamed of joining the town’s annual Independence Day parade.

She couldn't walk.

But that had never stopped her from wanting to participate.

She wanted to be part of the parade.

Not just watch it.

But when they arrived at the staging area, a man in a red official jacket stopped them.

He looked at Addie's wheelchair.

Then at the parade lineup.

His expression changed.

“I'm sorry,” he said.

May you like

“You can't participate.”

Addie’s smile disappeared.
