Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Family|

Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat.
"Julian," he repeated softly.
Julian Vescari had managed the waterfront shipping docks since Dominic took over the family five years ago. He was quiet, efficient, and had sat at Dominic’s dinner table every Sunday evening.
"Julian knew Mara was pregnant?" Dominic asked.
"Julian's men have been tracking Mara for six months," Rocco explained, his tone laced with anger. "He knew if Mara had a son or daughter, your bloodline would be secured. Under the syndicate charter, if you die without a direct heir, the chairmanship passes to the oldest nephew. Julian."
A cold, lethal stillness settled over Dominic. The fog of confusion that had clouded his mind since entering the ER burned away, replaced by absolute, murderous clarity.
"Where is Julian right now?" Dominic demanded.
"He’s at the docks in Midtown, Boss," Rocco replied. "He thinks Mara died on the bridge. He called an emergency meeting of the syndicate captains for midnight."
Dominic looked back into the incubator, watching his daughter's chest rise and fall.
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against the glass.
"I will be back, my sweet girl," he whispered softly. "Daddy is going to clean our house."

Dominic straightened his spine, buttoning his blood-stained coat over his chest. He turned to Rocco, his eyes flashing with raw, terrifying authority.
"Leave six men outside this door," Dominic ordered. "If anyone without a medical badge steps within ten feet of my daughter, execute them."
