THE HEART OF A STRANGER / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Unspoken BondWhen Julian returned later that night and learned from the housekeeper about Victor's visit, he was furious. He immediately went to Laya’s apartment building to check on her.

Laya opened her door to find Julian standing under the streetlights, his jaw set and eyes filled with concern.

"He had no right to talk to you like that," Julian said, his voice tight with anger. "I put Victor in his place tonight. He will never come near you or Maya again."

Laya looked up at him, touched by his fierce protectiveness. "Thank you, Julian. But you didn't have to drive all the way here at midnight."

"I had to," Julian murmured, stepping into the small entryway and taking her hands in his. "I couldn't bear the thought of you feeling unsafe or unwelcome."

The air between them grew thick with unspoken desire. Julian leaned in, his gaze dropping to her lips, before gently brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"I care about you, Laya," he whispered softly. "More than I should."

Laya’s heart raced. "Julian..."

Before they could bridge the remaining gap, Maya stirred in the bedroom, coughing softly. The moment broke, but as Julian said goodnight, both knew their relationship had irrevocably changed.
