Chapter 5 - A Shadow over the EstateHowever, tranquility at the estate was soon threatened. Julian’s ambitious cousin, Victor Weston, had been quietly managing the family’s investment portfolio and eyeing Walter’s vast inheritance.
Victor viewed Laya’s sudden presence in Walter's life as a direct threat to his financial ambitions. He began investigating her past, determined to find scandal or dirt to discredit her.
One evening, Victor arrived unannounced at the estate while Julian was away at a business dinner. He confronted Laya in the foyer, offering her a check for fifty thousand dollars.
"Take the money and leave tonight, Miss Thompson," Victor sneered condescendingly. "We all know what a broke, desperate single mother wants from an old, lonely billionaire."
Laya felt a sting of humiliation, but she stood tall, her eyes flashing with quiet dignity. She took the check, tore it into small pieces, and dropped it at Victor's feet.
