Chapter 1 - The Midnight RescueBy the time Laya Thompson left the diner that night, the rain had turned the whole city silver. It poured over rooftops, streamed down gutters, and slapped against the pavement in shining sheets.

Her old gray sedan coughed when she turned the key, but it finally shuddered alive. In the back seat, her five-year-old daughter, Maya, slept curled sideways in her booster seat, clutching a stuffed bunny. Laya looked at her in the rearview mirror, feeling the familiar ache behind her ribs. Everything she did—the double shifts, the burns on her wrists, the fake smiles—was for Maya.
As she drove through the storm, she saw an elderly man hunched beneath a lamppost, drenched to the bone, trembling, and looking completely lost. Every survival instinct told her to keep driving—she was a single mother alone at midnight. But looking at his confused, tired eyes, she couldn't leave him.
She pulled over, unlocked the passenger door, and ushered him into the warmth. The man introduced himself as Walter Weston. Laya drove him to his destination: a grand, gated estate in the wealthy Weston District.
When they arrived, she helped him through the pouring rain up to his front porch. "You have a rare heart, Miss Thompson," Walter said softly before stepping inside.

The next morning at 7:15 a.m., Laya arrived fifteen minutes late to her shift at the diner. Her cruel manager, Steve Simmons, publicly humiliated her in front of the entire restaurant and fired her on the spot, ignoring her four years of hard work.
Sitting alone in a corner booth, Walter Weston watched her walk out in tears. He had come to thank her, only to witness the bitter price of her kindness.
