THE HEART OF A STRANGER / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - Echoes of the PastOver the next three weeks, the quiet Weston estate transformed. Maya's infectious laughter filled the wide hallways, and Walter’s health improved dramatically.

Laya’s presence also began to melt the icy walls Julian had built around his heart. Julian found himself coming home early from his corporate headquarters just to share afternoon tea with Laya in the garden room.

One rainy afternoon, while Walter was taking a nap, Laya found Julian in the gallery staring at a portrait of a beautiful woman.

"My wife, Clara," Julian said quietly, his voice heavy with past trauma. "She died in a car accident three years ago during a storm just like the one last night. For a long time, I blamed myself for not being there to save her. I swore I would never let anyone close enough to hurt me again."

Laya stepped closer, gently laying her hand on his forearm. "Grief makes us want to build walls, Julian. But living inside a fortress just keeps out the warmth."

Julian looked down at her hand on his arm, then into her warm hazel eyes. The distance between them vanished, and in that quiet moment, Julian realized he was falling deeply in love with her.
