THE HEART OF A STRANGER / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Knock at the DoorBy noon, Laya was back in her tiny, dimly lit apartment, mechanically washing dishes while trying to suppress her panic. Rent was due, daycare needed to be paid, and her bank account was nearly empty.

A firm, respectful knock echoed at the door.

Laya opened the door on the security chain. Standing in the dim hallway was a tall, handsome man in his early thirties with dark blond hair and piercing blue eyes. He wore a tailored navy coat that radiated quiet authority.

"Miss Thompson?" he asked softly. "My name is Julian Weston. Walter is my father."

Laya’s guard immediately rose. "I don't need charity or pity, Mr. Weston."

"I didn't bring any," Julian replied calmly. He reached into his coat and handed her a cream-colored envelope. "My father was deeply moved by your kindness last night. He also saw what happened at the diner this morning."

Julian explained that Walter wanted to offer her a part-time position as his personal companion—three afternoons a week to read to him, share tea, and keep him company. The pay was more than double what she earned at the diner.

Looking down at little Maya coloring at the kitchen table, Laya realized she had no choice. She swallowed her pride and accepted the offer.
