Chapter 3 - The Secret Inside the WoodLater that evening, after the stunned guests had departed, the mansion fell into a peaceful quiet. Alexander sat in the warm lighting of the study alongside his mother and Sarah.

On the mahogany desk lay the simple wooden cane. Up close, Sarah could see faint, deep scratches near the handle, smoothed over by years of touch.

"You wondered why she fought so hard for this, didn't you, Sarah?" Alexander asked, pouring a cup of warm tea for his mother.

"I only knew Mrs. Eleanor held it like it was her most precious treasure," Sarah replied quietly.

Eleanor smiled weakly, running her fingers over the dark wood. "Twenty-five years ago, when our family lost everything and Alexander’s father passed away, we had no bread, no shelter, and no money. My late husband carved this cane from an oak tree in our small yard to help me walk to work every morning. It reminded us that as long as we had strength in our hands, we were never truly defeated."
