Chapter 6 - Confrontation in InterrogationMy appearance caused Kate's eyes to light up slightly. She smirked in her familiar, condescending way.

"Mark, you finally came," Kate said, her tone dripping with staged endurance. "You see, the children are traumatized and panicked after Emily’s death. They are projecting everything onto me. You are a smart man, you must understand..."
"What is the bottle of medicine in your safe?" I interrupted, my voice flat and distant.
The smirk on Kate's face instantly froze.
"And the toxins you gave Owen every day..." I continued, placing the forensic medical report onto the table. "...along with the $2.5 million you transferred from the kids' trust fund to an offshore account in Cayman. You planned to run away after driving them mad, didn't you?"
The color rapidly drained from Kate's face. She swallowed hard, her interlocked fingers trembling violently.
"You... you have no proof I gave him medicine..."
"Emily's old nanny phone recorded everything," I lied calmly, striking directly at her deepest fear. "It has motion sensors and infrared recording. The video of you spiking Owen's milk bottle on the night of the 14th last month is crystal clear."
Kate broke down instantly. She lunged across the table, screeching frantically: "He is my nephew! I just wanted him to obey! Why did Emily get everything? You, money, attention... while I had nothing? I gave up my youth to clean up your mess!"

I stood up, looking down at the hysterical woman in front of me.
"You didn't sacrifice anything," I whispered coldly. "You are just a rotten, envious coward. And you will pay for every single tear Lily shed, and every fever Owen had to endure."
