Chapter 14 - Rebuilding TrustMonths bled into a quiet rhythm. In our new coastal home, the sea breeze seemed to wash away the heavy scent of fear that had once defined our lives.

Every afternoon, I waited at the bus stop to pick up Lily and Owen. Owen slowly regained his weight, his laughter returning like sweet music to the house. Yet, healing was not a straight line. Whenever a door slammed shut too loudly or a shadow crossed the hallway, both children would still freeze, their eyes darting nervously toward me.

Instead of hiding from those moments, I sat on the floor with them, wrapping my arms around their small shoulders. "It's just the wind, sweetheart," I would whisper to Lily. "I am right here. No one is shutting you away ever again."
