Chapter 4 - The Hidden PaintingThe next morning, I returned to the mansion alongside the police and Miller to execute an emergency search warrant. Kate had been detained since last night at the police station for caught-in-the-act child abuse.

The mansion was eerily quiet. I walked into Kate's home office—which used to be Emily's reading room.

Everything was obsessively neat. On her desk lay luxury fashion magazines and high-end shopping receipts billed to the children's trust fund. But what caught my attention was a painting hanging slightly crooked on the wall.

I walked over and pulled the painting off. Hidden behind it was a wall safe.

"We don't have the combination," the police officer standing next to me noted.

"I know the combination," I said coldly, typing in the sequence: Emily's birthday.

Miraculously, the safe beeped and swung open. Kate loved her sister so much she used her birthday as a passcode, yet was cruel enough to abuse the children her sister gave birth to.

Inside the safe lay more than just cash and jewelry. Tucked away in the far corner was a folder of medical documents and an unlabeled bottle of liquid medicine.
