Chapter 16 - The Shadow of the PastInspector Vance hesitated before reaching back into her briefcase. "There is one more thing. While searching Kate’s old apartment, we found a safety deposit box key. Inside was a series of unsent letters addressed to you over the past three years."
She handed me a small bundle tied with faded ribbon. After she left, I sat alone by the fireplace and opened one.
The letters were filled with Kate’s delusional ramblings—how she believed she was meant to replace Emily, how she felt entitled to my wealth, and how she viewed my children as obstacles to her grand illusion. Reading her twisted logic made my stomach turn, but it also brought a strange sense of finality. The monster wasn't a mysterious force; she was just a pathetic, broken woman consumed by greed and jealousy.
I threw the bundle into the roaring fire, watching the pages burn into ash.
