Chapter 13 - Emily’s LetterWhile organizing Emily’s old belongings to bring into our new home, I found a locked wooden chest hidden beneath her wardrobe.

Unlocking it revealed Emily’s old journal along with a sealed letter addressed to me, written just weeks before she lost her battle with cancer.

Tears blurred my eyes as I read her gentle handwriting.

Dearest Mark,

May you like

If you are reading this, I am already gone. I know how deeply you love our family, even when your work takes you far away. But I must write this because I am afraid. Lately, I have seen a shadow in Kate’s eyes—a bitter envy that has consumed her. I tried to help her, but I fear her resentment towards me might turn into something dark after I am gone. Please, Mark, protect Lily and Owen. Promise me you will always hold them close and never let anyone stand between you and our children.

I pressed the letter to my chest, sobbing in the quiet room. Emily had foreseen the danger, but I had been too blind to notice. I swore to her memory that I would spend every remaining breath fulfilling that promise.
