Chapter 6 - THE SECOND BOXMargaret led them to the attic.

She opened an old trunk.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
And another wooden box.
Emily stared at it.
“Another one?”
Margaret nodded.
“This is everything I never wanted you to know.”
Michael opened it.
The first thing he found was a letter from his father.
The second was a medical report.
The third was a bank statement.
Michael read the documents.
Then looked up.
His father had not died of natural causes.
He had suffered from a heart condition.
But the medical records showed that he had been taking medication that had worsened his condition.
The medication had been prescribed by a doctor.
A doctor named Dr. Samuel Reed.
Michael recognized the name.
His mother's longtime physician.
“Why was Dad taking this?”
Margaret said nothing.
Michael looked at her.
“Mom.”
She finally whispered:
“Your father was going to leave me.”
Emily's eyes widened.
“He was going to divorce you?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Margaret began crying.
“I couldn't lose everything.”
Michael stared at her.
“What did you do?”
Margaret looked at him.
May you like
“I didn't kill him.”
But she had not answered the question.
