He could not live there anymore.
Every room contained a secret.
The living room held the box of letters.
The attic held the documents.
The master bedroom held years of lies.
Emily helped him pack.
They found old photographs.
Some showed Margaret smiling.
Some showed Robert.
Some showed Michael as a child.
Emily looked at one photograph.
“Your family looked so happy.”
Michael stared at it.
“Maybe we were.”
“Were you?”
He thought for a moment.
“Sometimes.”
That was the hardest part.
The family had not been fake every day.
There had been real love.
Real laughter.
Real memories.
The lies did not erase the good moments.
But they changed what those moments meant.
Michael placed the photograph in a box.
He did not destroy it.
