Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED EVERYTHINGMichael returned home furious.

Margaret was waiting.
“You went to see her.”
“Yes.”
“You should not have.”
“You don't get to decide that anymore.”
Margaret looked hurt.
“I was protecting you.”
“From my own sister?”
“She is not your sister.”
Michael stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because she is the child of betrayal.”
He froze.
“Dad cheated on you?”
Margaret's face changed.
For a moment, she looked vulnerable.
“Yes.”
Michael said nothing.
“He promised me he had ended it.”
“Did he?”
Margaret looked away.
“No.”
Michael realized something.
His mother had been betrayed.
But instead of leaving, she had chosen control.
She had spent decades punishing everyone.
His father.
Claire.
Lily.
Emily.
And now him.
“You were hurt,” Michael said quietly.
Margaret looked at him.
“But you became the person hurting everyone else.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You think I don't know that?”
Michael was stunned.
For the first time, Margaret sounded tired.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Just broken.

Then she whispered:
“Your father wasn't the only one who had a secret.”
