Chapter 9 - THE CONFESSIONMargaret finally admitted everything.

She had intercepted the letters.
She had read every one.
She had chosen which letters to give Emily.
She had lied about the others.
She had told Michael that Emily was cold.
She had told Emily that Michael was distant.
“I was afraid,” Margaret said.
“Of what?”
“That you would leave me.”
Michael stared at her.
“You were my mother.”
“You were all I had.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I was your son.”
Margaret cried.
“You don't understand what your father did.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You don't understand what you did to me.”
The room fell silent.
Emily stepped forward.
“You took fourteen months from us.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“You took years from Claire and Lily.”
Michael added.
“And maybe you took my father's life.”
Margaret suddenly screamed:
“I DIDN'T KILL HIM!”
The sound echoed through the house.
Then she collapsed into a chair.
