Chapter 20 - THE BOX WITH NO LOCKYears later, Emily found Michael sitting in the attic.

He was holding the old wooden box.

The box that had once contained fourteen months of silence.

She sat beside him.

“Why are you looking at it?”

Michael smiled.

“I was thinking about how much damage a few envelopes caused.”

Emily shook her head.

“The letters didn't cause the damage.”

Michael looked at her.

“The lies did.”

She nodded.

They sat quietly.

Then Michael opened the box.

Inside were the letters.

His father's confession.

Photographs of Claire and Lily.

And one final envelope.

Emily frowned.

“What is that?”

Michael picked it up.

“I don't know.”

It had been hidden beneath the bottom of the box.

The envelope was old.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

Michael opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

The person who hid the letters was not the only one who knew where they were.

Michael stared at the words.

Emily looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Michael turned the envelope over.

On the back was another name.

A name neither of them recognized.

And beneath it, a date.

The date was only three months before his father's death.

Michael slowly stood.

For years, they had believed Margaret was the center of every secret.

But perhaps she had not been.

Perhaps someone else had been watching.

Someone else had known.

Someone else had helped hide the truth.

Michael looked at Emily.

“There's one more secret.”

Emily took his hand.

“Then this time, we find it together.”

And as they walked downstairs, the old wooden box remained open.

Unlocked.

Because the truth had finally taught them something.

Secrets do not disappear when you hide them.

They wait.

Sometimes for months.

Sometimes for years.

May you like

Sometimes until one broken cabinet, one forgotten box, and one unopened letter changes everything.

THE END
