Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN WAITINGClaire had spent twenty-five years waiting for an apology.

When Margaret finally visited her, Claire almost closed the door.

Margaret stood outside.

Older.

Weaker.

Without the confidence she had once possessed.

“I am sorry.”

Claire stared at her.

“For what?”

Margaret began crying.

“For everything.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“You stole my life.”

“I know.”

“You convinced him I was using him.”

“I know.”

“You kept my daughter from her father.”

“I know.”

Claire stepped closer.

“And now you want forgiveness?”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

Claire was surprised.

“I don't deserve it.”

For the first time, Claire saw something different.

Not manipulation.

Not control.

Regret.

But regret did not erase twenty-five years.

Claire closed the door.

Margaret stood outside for a long time.

Then walked away.
