Chapter 9 - The Condition of Mercy|

Mia looked at the two disgraced heiress and her father kneeling on the floor.

Five months ago, when she was working double shifts at the Obsidian Room, she had watched dozens of wealthy guests treat the waitstaff like dirt. She had felt the crushing humiliation of being invisible in a city driven by money and power.

She turned her head to look at Matthew. "Can we stop the bankruptcy?"

Matthew looked down at her, surprised. "Mia, they tried to humiliate you."

"I know," Mia said gently, resting her hand over his. "But destroying them entirely won't undo what happened last night. I don't want their money, Matthew. But I want them to remember this day."

Matthew stared at his wife, seeing the quiet, unbreakable strength beneath her gentle soul.

He turned back to Richard Kensington.

"The bankruptcy stands," Matthew announced, his voice like grinding stone. "Kensington Global Shipping is finished. But... I will purchase your harbor contracts at fair market value, giving your family enough capital to pay off your personal debts and keep your estate."

Richard gasped, tears of profound relief flooding his face. "Thank you! Thank you, Mr. Castille! Thank you, Mrs. Castille!"

"On one condition," Matthew added coldly.

Chloe looked up, trembling. "What condition?"

"Your daughter will complete two hundred hours of community service at the Chicago Women's Shelter," Matthew stated flatly. "And she will personally hand-deliver a written apology to every server who worked at the Obsidian Room last night."

Chloe’s face flushed bright red with fresh humiliation, but she nodded frantically. "I'll do it! I promise! I'll do anything!"

"Get out of my house," Matthew ordered.

Rocco and Vincent stepped forward, grabbing Richard and Chloe by their arms, escorting the broken family out of the penthouse forever.
