Chapter 19 - The Birth of an Empire|

An hour after the siege ended, inside the secure medical suite in the west wing, Mia’s real labor began.

The stress and adrenaline of the night had triggered her body, and Dr. Mercer confirmed she was six centimeters dilated.

Matthew, having scrubbed the gunpowder from his hands and changed into a clean cotton shirt, sat on the edge of the delivery bed, holding Mia’s hand tightly in his.

"You're doing wonderful, Mia," Dr. Mercer said warmly, adjusting the monitors. "One more strong push on the next wave!"

Mia’s knuckles turned white as she squeezed Matthew’s hand, her face flushed, sweat clinging to her dark hair as she pushed with everything she had left.

"I'm right here, my love," Matthew whispered into her ear, his hand supporting her neck, his voice steady as an anchor. "I'm right here."

At 5:42 AM, as the first golden rays of dawn broke over Lake Michigan, a sharp, powerful cry echoed through the room.

Waaaaah! Waaaaah!

Dr. Mercer lifted the newborn, swift and gentle, wrapping the baby in a soft warm blanket before laying them directly onto Mia’s bare chest.

"It's a boy!" the nurse cheered softly.

Eight pounds, two ounces. A thick mop of dark hair, strong lungs, and clear gray eyes that mirrored his father’s completely.

Mia wept tears of pure, overwhelming joy, holding her son against her chest, her thumb gently tracing his tiny cheek.

Matthew stared down at his son, his breath catching in his throat, tears pricking his gray eyes for the first time in his adult life. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, leaning down to press his lips against Mia’s forehead, then kissing his baby's tiny hand.

"His name is Alexander," Mia whispered softly, looking at her husband. "Alexander Castille."

"Alexander," Matthew repeated, his voice thick with profound emotion. "The heir to everything."
