Chapter 15 - The False Alarm|

Two weeks later.

The Lake Forest estate was transformed into an impenetrable fortress. Over fifty heavily armed Castille guards patrolled the perimeter, while the west wing had been converted into a state-of-the-art medical suite staffed by Dr. Mercer and three senior obstetrics nurses.

Mia was in her thirty-eighth week of pregnancy. Her stomach was heavy, and she spent most of her time resting in the master bedroom suite.

At two o'clock in the morning, a sharp, sudden pain shot across Mia’s lower abdomen.

She gasped out loud, clutching the silk sheets. "Matthew!"

Matthew, who had been sleeping lightly beside her, bolted upright instantly. "Mia! What's wrong?!"

"A contraction," Mia panted, sweat instantly breaking out across her forehead. "It's... it's happening, Matthew!"

Matthew didn't panic. He scooped her into his arms, carrying her swiftly down the wide hallway to the west wing surgical suite, shouting for Dr. Mercer.

Within seconds, the medical team was assembled, lights flashed, and monitors hummed to life.

Dr. Mercer examined Mia quickly, checking her vitals and monitor readings.

After five minutes, the doctor let out a long breath and looked up at Matthew with a calm smile.

"False alarm, Matthew," Dr. Mercer announced. "Braxton Hicks contractions. Her cervix is still closed. The baby is just shifting down."

Mia let out a long, ragged breath of relief, leaning back against the plush pillows as the sharp pain subsided.

Matthew closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against her hand, his broad shoulders shaking slightly from the sudden adrenaline crash.

"Don't scare me like that, little one," Matthew rasped out, kissing her knuckles gently.

Mia smiled softly, stroking his dark hair. "They're just eager to meet their father."
