Chapter 9 - THE LETTER FROM THE DEAD

The envelope contained a letter written by Ryan’s father.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Ryan had seen it on birthday cards and business notes for most of his life.

The letter was dated two weeks before Charles Whitmore died.

Ryan read it in the hospital chapel.

Maya sat beside him.

Claire stood near the back wall.

MY SON,

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOUR MOTHER HAS FINALLY GONE TOO FAR.

Ryan stopped.

His hands tightened around the page.

The letter continued.

Charles described years of manipulation.

Evelyn had isolated him from friends.

She had controlled his medication.

She had intercepted business calls.

She had convinced relatives that his memory was failing.

Charles suspected she was preparing to declare him incompetent.

He had hidden the letter with instructions that it be delivered if Evelyn ever targeted Ryan’s family.

But the letter had never been delivered.

Instead, Evelyn had placed it on his grave.

“She wanted you to find this.”

Maya spoke quietly.

“Why?”

Ryan turned to the final page.

The answer was there.

Charles had created a protected trust for Oliver.

The trust contained shares worth tens of millions of dollars.

Ryan would manage those shares until Oliver turned twenty-five.

But one clause changed everything.

If Ryan or Maya were declared mentally unfit, control would pass to the nearest competent grandparent.

Evelyn.

Claire covered her mouth.

“This was about the trust.”

Ryan felt numb.

His mother had always been wealthy.

But the trust contained controlling shares in Whitmore Medical Systems.

Those shares could determine who led the company.

Evelyn had been forced from the board after Charles’s death.

Oliver’s trust was her path back.

“She needed both of us disqualified.”

Maya looked toward the chapel doors.

“That’s why the petition attacked you too.”

Ryan reread his father’s words.

Charles had warned him.

But Evelyn had hidden the warning until it could be used as a weapon.

“She left the letter because she knew we would discover the trust.”

Claire shook her head.

“Or because she wants you to think money was her only motive.”

Detective Torres entered the chapel.

Her expression was serious.

“Briarwood Behavioral Center was searched.”

“What did you find?”

“An empty room prepared under Maya’s name.”

“There were restraints attached to the bed.”

Ryan stood so fast that the chair struck the floor.

Torres continued.

“We found medication orders.”

“They were signed by a physician who died eight months ago.”

Maya turned pale.

“There was also a camera in the room.”

“Where did it transmit?”

“To the same encrypted account used in Oliver’s nursery.”

Ryan looked at Claire.

Claire immediately shook her head.

“I never created another camera.”

Torres nodded.

“We believe your account was a cover.”

“The actual administrator used a hidden secondary login.”

“Can you identify them?”

“Our team recovered one location.”

“Where?”

“Whitmore Medical Systems headquarters.”

Ryan stared at her.

The company building required employee clearance.

Evelyn no longer had access.

Samuel Price did not work there.

Someone inside Ryan’s own company had been helping them.

Someone with enough authority to use the secure network.

Someone who knew the trust existed.

Ryan’s phone vibrated.

A company alert appeared.

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING CALLED FOR 10:00 A.M.

The meeting had been requested by Chief Financial Officer Marcus Hale.
