Chapter 4 - THE THINGS MAYA NEVER SAID

Ryan sat across from Maya in the empty consultation room.
Detective Torres quietly closed the door behind her.
“What did my mother do to you before tonight?”
Maya stared at her wedding ring.
“She started with small things.”
“She moved my keys and told you I was forgetful.”
“She canceled Oliver’s appointments and said I wrote down the wrong dates.”
“She threw away food I prepared and claimed I was trying to make him sick.”
Ryan remembered the arguments.
He remembered telling Maya to slow down.
He remembered suggesting she keep a calendar.
Each memory now felt poisoned.
“She made me look careless.”
Maya’s voice trembled.
“Then she started telling people I was depressed.”
“She said motherhood was overwhelming me.”
“She offered to take Oliver more often.”
“When I refused, she told me I was becoming possessive.”
Ryan sat motionless.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did.”
Maya looked at him.
“You always had an explanation for her.”
“She was lonely.”
“She was grieving your father.”
“She was trying to help.”
“You said she loved Oliver too much to hurt him.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Every excuse had come from him.
Every excuse had protected Evelyn.
Maya continued.
“Two months ago, she locked me outside while Oliver was sleeping upstairs.”
“She told you I wandered away and forgot my keys.”
“Last month, she switched his medicine bottles.”
“I noticed before giving him the wrong one.”
“She said I must have confused them.”
Ryan felt sick.
“Did she ever hit you before tonight?”
“Once.”
“Where?”
“In the laundry room.”
Maya touched her ribs.
“She shoved me into the dryer.”
“She apologized afterward.”
“She said she was frightened because I was keeping Oliver from her.”
“Why didn’t you leave?”
“I was afraid you would believe her.”
The truth was unbearable because Ryan knew she had been right.
He had believed his mother before.
He had questioned Maya’s memory.
He had asked whether she was sleeping enough.
He had suggested therapy.
He had become part of Evelyn’s plan without realizing it.
“I failed you.”
Maya shook her head.
“This is not the time.”
“It is exactly the time.”
Ryan knelt in front of her.
“I watched you doubt yourself.”
“I helped her do that.”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have known.”
A nurse entered.
“Oliver is stable enough for one parent to sit with him.”
Maya stood immediately.
Ryan followed her into the pediatric intensive care unit.
Oliver looked impossibly small beneath the blankets.
A clear tube rested beneath his nose.
His eyes opened when Maya touched his hair.
“Mommy?”
“I’m here.”
“Grandma said you made me sick.”
Ryan froze.
Maya’s face crumpled.
Oliver looked toward his father.
“She said you would take me away from Mommy.”
Ryan leaned over the bed.
“No one is taking you away from her.”
“Do you promise?”
“I promise.”
Oliver closed his eyes again.
Ryan kissed his forehead.
When he straightened, Detective Torres was waiting outside the room.
“We recovered part of the camera log.”
“Was it recording?”
“Yes.”
“But someone deleted the footage from tonight.”
Ryan looked through the glass at his son.
“Can you recover it?”
“We’re trying.”
Torres hesitated.
“There is something else.”
May you like
“The camera account was created six months ago.”
“The recovery email belongs to someone in your family.”
