Chapter 11 - THE VIDEO THAT BROKE HER STORY

The recovered video spread through the investigation within minutes.

Evelyn’s attorney could no longer call the assault a misunderstanding.

Samuel Price could no longer deny entering the house.

Marcus Hale could no longer claim the company login was innocent.

Arrest warrants were issued.

Price disappeared before officers reached his home.

Marcus remained in custody.

Evelyn stayed hidden.

The media changed its tone.

The perfect grandmother became the fugitive heiress.

The unstable wife became the injured mother who had shielded her child.

Maya hated both descriptions.

“I am not a headline.”

She stood beside Oliver’s hospital window.

“I am not a symbol.”

“I am his mother.”

Ryan turned off the television.

“You don’t have to speak to anyone.”

“They are already speaking for me.”

Maya looked at him.

“Your mother did that.”

“Your relatives did that.”

“The reporters are doing it now.”

Ryan nodded.

“What do you need from me?”

“The truth.”

“You have it.”

“No.”

“I need all of it.”

Maya placed Charles’s letter on the table.

“Marcus said your father was dying for a reason.”

“Your father wrote that Evelyn controlled his medication.”

“You told me he died from heart failure.”

“He did.”

“Are you certain?”

Ryan had never questioned it.

Charles had declined quickly.

He had become confused.

He had struggled to stand.

Evelyn had managed every appointment.

She had refused a second opinion because she said travel would exhaust him.

Ryan remembered one evening when Charles tried to speak privately.

Evelyn had entered the room and ended the conversation.

At the time, Ryan believed she was protecting a sick man.

Now the memory felt different.

Detective Torres arranged for Charles’s medical records to be reviewed.

The records showed repeated medication changes.

Several prescriptions had no corresponding physician notes.

One sedative had been filled six times in three months.

The prescribing doctor denied authorizing four of them.

Maya sat down slowly.

“She did this before.”

Ryan stared at his father’s signature on the letter.

“She made everyone think he was losing his mind.”

“The same way she tried to make me look unstable.”

Ryan looked toward Oliver’s room.

“The same way she was preparing to attack me.”

Torres entered with a sealed file.

“We found the original recording from Maya’s phone.”

The audio was damaged but usable.

Evelyn’s voice filled the room.

TAKE THE MONEY.

LEAVE RYAN.

YOUR SON WILL HAVE A BETTER LIFE WITHOUT YOU.

Maya’s recorded voice answered.

OLIVER IS NOT A COMPANY ASSET.

Evelyn laughed.

EVERYONE IS AN ASSET IF YOU UNDERSTAND THEIR VALUE.

The recording continued.

Then a second voice entered the room.

A man’s voice.

Marcus Hale.

“We should stop.”

“It’s too soon.”

Evelyn replied.

“No.”

May you like

“Charles waited too long.”

“I won’t make the same mistake twice.”
