Chapter 17 - THE LIST

The flash drive contained seventeen folders.

Each folder was named after a person.

Charles Whitmore.

Anna Reed.

Maya Whitmore.

Ryan Whitmore.

Claire Whitmore.

Oliver Whitmore.

The remaining names belonged to board members, doctors, attorneys, and former employees.

Every folder contained private information.

Medical records.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Recorded conversations.

Draft legal documents.

Evelyn had built a system for controlling anyone who threatened her.

Ryan opened his own folder.

It contained reports from a private investigator.

His movements had been tracked for two years.

His lunches were photographed.

His phone calls were logged.

His therapy appointments after Charles’s death were documented.

A draft petition described him as emotionally volatile and unable to manage the company.

Maya read the final page.

“She planned to remove you after me.”

Ryan opened Oliver’s folder.

Inside were pediatric records.

School applications.

Custody plans.

A document titled PRIMARY GUARDIAN TRANSITION.

It described how Oliver should be told his parents were ill.

It recommended limiting contact.

It suggested changing his last name in private settings to reduce emotional attachment.

Ryan closed the file.

“I cannot read another word.”

Detective Torres examined Evelyn’s folder.

It contained no weaknesses.

No photographs.

No compromising information.

Only a sentence.

CONTROL IS SAFETY.

Claire sat in the corner.

“I should have opened the drive.”

“You should have gone to the police.”

Ryan’s anger returned.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don’t.”

“Maya could have been locked inside Briarwood.”

“Oliver could have died.”

Claire stood.

“You think I don’t understand?”

“She had a folder on me too.”

“She knew I was the one who gave Dad a second phone.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What second phone?”

“Dad called me the week before he died.”

“He said Mom was changing his pills.”

“He asked me to help him leave.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“You were in London.”

“Mom found the phone.”

“She told me Dad was confused.”

“Then she showed me documents saying he wanted to disinherit me.”

“I believed her.”

Ryan turned away.

Evelyn had not simply manipulated them separately.

She had designed different lies for each person.

She made Ryan feel responsible.

She made Claire feel rejected.

She made Maya feel unstable.

She made Charles look confused.

She found the fear inside each person and built a cage around it.

Detective Torres received an alert.

Thomas Grant’s rental car had been found near the train station.

Security footage showed him boarding a northbound train.

Officers searched the passenger list.

Grant had used another name.

But facial recognition identified him.

He was traveling toward the protected apartment where Ryan, Maya, and Oliver were staying.

The train would arrive in twenty-three minutes.

Maya looked at Ryan.

“Oliver is there with the police nanny.”

Ryan was already running.
