Chapter 15 - THE WITNESS THEY CREATED

Anna had been held for eight months.

At Briarwood, doctors had drugged her.

They forced her to sign statements.

The statements claimed Maya screamed at Oliver.

They claimed Maya left him unattended.

They claimed Maya intentionally withheld medication.

Anna had refused to testify.

That was why Evelyn moved her to the lake house.

“She told me Oliver would be safer with her.”

Anna’s voice shook.

“She said Maya would be sent away.”

“She said Ryan would eventually understand.”

Maya sat beside the hospital bed.

“Why did she choose you?”

“Because I knew your routines.”

“I knew when Oliver took medicine.”

“I knew when Ryan traveled.”

“I knew which stories would sound believable.”

Anna began crying.

“I am sorry.”

Maya held her hand.

“You did not do this.”

“They did.”

Anna gave police enough evidence to charge Evelyn with kidnapping, unlawful confinement, conspiracy, child endangerment, assault, and evidence tampering.

Marcus Hale faced fraud and conspiracy charges.

Samuel Price faced decades in prison despite his cooperation.

The investigation into Charles’s death continued.

Evelyn’s bail request was denied.

At the hearing, she entered the courtroom wearing a navy suit and pearls.

She looked like the woman on hospital donor walls.

She looked like the woman who had hosted charity galas.

She looked nothing like someone accused of terrorizing her own family.

Her attorney described her as a grieving widow.

He described Maya as vindictive.

He suggested Ryan had been manipulated by his wife.

Then the prosecutor played the nursery footage.

The courtroom watched Evelyn remove the inhaler.

They watched Price restrain Maya.

They watched Evelyn strike her.

They heard Oliver crying.

They heard Evelyn say Maya would be gone by morning.

The judge’s expression changed.

Evelyn looked straight ahead.

She did not blink.

The prosecutor played Maya’s recording next.

EVERYONE IS AN ASSET IF YOU UNDERSTAND THEIR VALUE.

Whispers spread through the courtroom.

Finally, Anna testified by video.

She described Charles’s medication.

She described Briarwood.

She described the chains at the lake house.

Evelyn’s attorney tried to attack her credibility.

“You were employed as a nanny, correct?”

“Yes.”

“You were dismissed for theft.”

“No.”

“That was a lie.”

“You have received psychiatric treatment.”

“I was drugged in a facility controlled by your client’s attorney.”

The attorney stopped.

The judge denied every request for release.

As officers led Evelyn away, she turned toward Ryan.

“You think prison will make you safe?”

Ryan said nothing.

May you like

Evelyn smiled.

“You still don’t know who opened the nursery door for me.”
