Chapter 10 - THE FRIEND AT THE TABLE

Marcus Hale had known Ryan since college.
He had stood beside him at his wedding.
He was Oliver’s godfather.
He had visited the hospital when Oliver was born.
Now his credentials were connected to the camera network used to spy on Ryan’s family.
Ryan attended the board meeting remotely from a secure hospital office.
Marcus sat at the head of the conference table.
Evelyn’s former allies surrounded him.
“Ryan, we are concerned about your ability to lead during this crisis.”
Marcus sounded sympathetic.
“The media reports are becoming damaging.”
“My son nearly died.”
“We understand.”
“No.”
“You understand the stock price.”
Marcus glanced at the other directors.
“We have a duty to the company.”
Ryan held up Charles’s letter.
“Did you know about Oliver’s trust?”
Marcus’s face remained still.
“I knew Charles created an estate structure.”
“Did you know it contained controlling shares?”
“That information was confidential.”
“That was not my question.”
Marcus leaned back.
“Ryan, this is not the appropriate place.”
“Did you help my mother install cameras?”
Several directors began whispering.
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“That accusation is absurd.”
“The camera administrator used the company network.”
“Hundreds of employees use our network.”
“The login came from the executive floor.”
Silence spread around the table.
Marcus removed his glasses.
“You are under tremendous stress.”
Ryan almost smiled.
The same words.
The same method.
Make him emotional.
Make him unreliable.
Make him look unstable.
“My mother taught you well.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
A security officer entered the conference room.
He whispered into Marcus’s ear.
Marcus stood.
“This meeting is adjourned.”
Detective Torres appeared on Ryan’s screen behind him.
She had entered the boardroom with two officers.
“Marcus Hale, we need to examine your office and electronic devices.”
Marcus looked directly into the camera.
“Ryan, you are making a serious mistake.”
Ryan’s voice remained calm.
“I have made many.”
“Trusting you was one of them.”
The officers searched Marcus’s office.
Inside a locked cabinet, they found copies of the custody petition.
They found financial projections showing how Evelyn could regain board control.
They also found a key card registered to Samuel Price.
Marcus was detained for questioning.
Before being taken away, he turned toward the camera.
“You have no idea what your father did.”
Ryan leaned closer.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus smiled without humor.
“Ask your mother why Charles was really dying.”
The connection ended.
That afternoon, forensic technicians recovered the deleted nursery footage.
Ryan, Maya, and Detective Torres watched it together.
The video showed Evelyn entering the room.
It showed her removing the inhaler.
It showed Maya confronting her.
It showed Evelyn striking Maya across the face.
Then Samuel Price stepped into view.
He did not stop Evelyn.
He held Maya’s arms while Evelyn searched her pockets for the phone.
Oliver began crying in his crib.
Evelyn turned toward him.
She looked directly into the hidden camera.

Then she said the sentence that destroyed every remaining doubt.
“By tomorrow morning, his mother will be gone.”
