Chapter 12 - WHAT HAPPENED TO CHARLES

A judge authorized the exhumation of Charles Whitmore’s body.

The decision became national news.

Ryan felt as though his family’s private darkness had been dragged beneath stadium lights.

Reporters filled the sidewalk outside the hospital.

Former employees began contacting the police.

Some described Evelyn as generous.

Others described her as terrifying.

A retired nurse remembered unexplained bruises on Charles’s arms.

A pharmacist remembered Evelyn demanding early refills.

A household driver remembered Charles begging to be taken to another doctor.

The driver had refused because Evelyn threatened to fire him.

Each statement widened the investigation.

Oliver was discharged after four days.

Ryan and Maya did not return home.

The nursery remained a crime scene.

They moved into a protected apartment arranged by the district attorney.

Oliver asked why his toys were gone.

Maya told him the police were keeping them safe.

He asked when he would see Grandma.

Ryan knelt in front of him.

“Not for a long time.”

“Is she mad at me?”

“No.”

“Did I do something bad?”

Ryan pulled him into his arms.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Oliver whispered against his shoulder.

“Grandma said Mommy would go away because I cried too much.”

Maya turned toward the window.

Her shoulders began trembling.

Ryan held out his hand.

She joined them on the floor.

For several minutes, the three of them remained together.

No company.

No trust.

No investigation.

Just a frightened child between two parents trying to rebuild safety.

The forensic examination of Charles’s remains took ten days.

The results confirmed long-term exposure to a powerful sedative.

The amount was not immediately fatal.

But combined with his heart medication, it could have caused confusion, weakness, and respiratory problems.

The medical examiner changed the manner of death from natural to undetermined.

Detective Torres believed it would eventually become homicide.

Ryan listened without moving.

“My mother poisoned my father.”

“We cannot say that yet.”

“She controlled his medicine.”

“We still need proof of administration.”

Torres placed another document on the table.

“We found the pharmacy surveillance archive.”

The footage was old and partially corrupted.

But one frame showed Evelyn collecting the unauthorized prescription.

Another showed Marcus standing beside her.

The final image showed someone waiting in the car.

Samuel Price.

Three people.

The same three involved in the plan against Maya.

The pattern had existed for years.

Ryan looked at Torres.

“Why would Marcus help her kill my father?”

Torres opened a financial ledger.

“Because Charles planned to remove him from the company.”

“He discovered Marcus had diverted twelve million dollars.”

“Evelyn helped conceal it.”

“In return, Marcus helped her control Charles.”

Maya touched Ryan’s arm.

The betrayal was no longer one person.

It was a network.

A system built around power, money, and fear.

Then Torres’s phone rang.

She listened.

Her eyes sharpened.

“Samuel Price was found.”

“Where?”

“In a motel outside Baltimore.”

“Is he alive?”

May you like

“Yes.”

“And he says he is ready to tell us where Evelyn is.”
