Chapter 19 - THE EMPTY CELL

Police reached the detention facility at midnight.

The emergency alarms had been disabled.

Two guards were found unconscious.

Evelyn’s cell was empty.

A transport van was missing.

Security footage showed a medical team entering with forged authorization papers.

The van left twenty minutes before the alert.

Ryan stared at the screen.

Even from inside a locked cell, his mother had continued planning.

The man leading the fake medical team was Dr. Nathan Cole.

The doctor whose signature had been forged.

The doctor who claimed he knew nothing.

He had lied from the beginning.

Cole had treated Charles.

Cole had approved the medication changes.

Cole had helped create the psychiatric report against Maya.

Now he was helping Evelyn escape.

Roadblocks were established.

Airports were locked down.

The private airfield Grant mentioned was searched.

A jet waited on the runway.

Its engines were warm.

No passengers were aboard.

The pilot had received instructions to depart at one fifteen.

The destination was Montreal.

Detective Torres found a burner phone inside the cockpit.

One outgoing message had been sent.

THE CHILD WAS NOT ACQUIRED.

CHANGE TO SECOND ROUTE.

Ryan read the message.

“What is the second route?”

No one knew.

Maya looked at a map of the region.

“Evelyn does not run when she loses.”

“She changes the story.”

Ryan turned toward her.

“What story can she possibly create now?”

“One where she becomes the victim.”

At three in the morning, every major news station received the same video.

Evelyn appeared alone in a dark room.

She wore no jewelry.

Her hair was disordered.

A bruise marked her forehead.

She looked directly into the camera.

“My son has been manipulated by a dangerous woman.”

“I have been falsely imprisoned.”

“I escaped because I fear for my life.”

“Evidence about Charles’s death has been altered.”

“Oliver is in immediate danger.”

“I am asking the public to help me save my grandson.”

The video ended with photographs of Maya’s private therapy records.

The documents were real.

But the notes had been rearranged.

Sentences about ordinary anxiety were presented as violent thoughts.

News commentators began debating Maya’s stability.

The old story returned.

Not because the evidence supported it.

Because fear was easier to spread than truth.

Maya watched the broadcast silently.

Ryan switched it off.

“She cannot win.”

“She does not need to win.”

Maya’s voice was calm.

“She only needs people to doubt.”

Detective Torres entered with the forensic report.

“The video was uploaded from a satellite connection.”

“We cannot trace the location.”

“However, Dr. Cole’s vehicle was found near the old Whitmore clinic.”

Ryan knew the building.

It had been closed for years.

Charles had financed it before his death.

Police surrounded the clinic before sunrise.

Inside, they found medical supplies.

Forged passports.

Cash.

And a wall covered with photographs of Oliver.

But Evelyn was gone.

On the examination table lay one final envelope.

It was addressed to Maya.
