Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED DRAWER

The police officer placed the custody petition on the nursery carpet.
Ryan stared at his mother’s signature at the bottom of the page.
The document had been dated three weeks earlier.
Three weeks before Maya had supposedly become dangerous.
Three weeks before Oliver’s inhaler disappeared.
Three weeks before Ryan walked into the nursery and found his wife bleeding.
Officer Daniel Hayes opened another folder.
Inside were handwritten descriptions of incidents that had never happened.
Maya had allegedly screamed at Oliver.
Maya had allegedly refused to give him medication.
Maya had allegedly threatened to leave the country with him.
Ryan read every accusation.
His hands began to shake.
“Who wrote these?”
Evelyn remained beside the window.
Her pearl-gray coat was spotless.
Her silver hair was perfectly arranged.
“I was documenting what I observed.”
Maya pressed a towel beneath her bleeding nose.
“You weren’t documenting anything.”
“You were building a story.”
Oliver wheezed in Maya’s arms.
The sound immediately pulled Ryan’s attention away from the papers.
He dropped to his knees beside his son.
“Where is the inhaler?”
Evelyn folded her hands calmly.
“I already told you.”
“Maya misplaced it during her episode.”
Ryan looked into his mother’s eyes.
He had known those eyes his entire life.
They had comforted him after childhood nightmares.
They had watched him graduate from college.
They had filled with tears at his wedding.
Now they looked empty.
Officer Hayes searched the drawer again.
His fingers found a false wooden panel along the back.
He pulled it forward.
A small blue inhaler fell onto the carpet.
Maya gasped.
Ryan stopped breathing.
Evelyn’s expression finally changed.
Only for one second.
Only a tiny tightening around her mouth.
But Ryan saw it.
The inhaler had Oliver’s name printed across the label.
Officer Hayes picked it up with a gloved hand.
“Mrs. Whitmore, step away from the window.”
Evelyn’s voice remained controlled.
“This proves nothing.”
Ryan stood slowly.
“It proves you knew where it was.”
“No.”
“It proves you hid it.”
“I was protecting him.”
“From what?”
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“From her.”
Oliver’s body suddenly went limp.
Maya screamed his name.
Ryan caught his son before he slipped from her arms.
Officer Hayes shouted for the paramedics.
Footsteps thundered through the hallway.
The nursery filled with uniforms, equipment, and urgent voices.
A paramedic placed an oxygen mask over Oliver’s face.
Another checked his pulse.
Maya tried to follow as they lifted him onto a stretcher.
Her knees collapsed beneath her.
Ryan caught her.
For one terrible moment, he held his injured wife while strangers carried his son away.
Then Officer Hayes turned Evelyn toward the wall.
Metal handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
Evelyn looked over her shoulder at Ryan.
“You will regret choosing her.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
“I’m not choosing between my mother and my wife.”
“I’m choosing my child.”
The paramedics rushed Oliver down the stairs.
Ryan followed them.

Behind him, Evelyn called his name.
He never turned around.
