Chapter 7 - The Ambush

The trap was set for a rainy Tuesday night at the old shipping docks on the Chicago riverfront. Dante’s men leaked false documents indicating a massive cash shipment would be transferred unaccompanied. True to form, Victor Vance’s syndicate launched a coordinated ambush, believing they had caught the Moretti family off guard.
Dante and his loyal men were positioned in the shadows, waiting for the strike. However, Marcus—the traitorous security guard—had anticipated a trap and managed to slip away from the perimeter, circling back toward the command vehicle where Elena had been left under light guard for her own safety.

Elena, sitting inside the armored SUV, watched through the rearview mirror as Marcus crept up behind the lone remaining guard, drawing a silenced pistol. Without a second hesitation, Elena slammed her hand repeatedly on the vehicle’s electronic horn, the deafening blare shattering the quiet night and alerting the nearby guards just in time. Marcus fired wildly, grazing the door, before Dante’s enforcers tackled him to the ground.
When Dante rushed back to the vehicle, his heart pounding with raw panic, he flung open the door. "Are you hurt?" he demanded, gripping her shoulders. Elena shook her head calmly, offering a reassuring smile that grounded his racing pulse.
