Chapter 5 - The Rat Within

Armed with Elena’s silent warning, Dante initiated a quiet, internal audit of the north district records over the next forty-eight hours. To his profound fury, he discovered that Paul Vance had been skimming millions from the syndicate's legitimate front businesses and funneling them to a rival faction led by Victor Vance, Paul's estranged cousin.
Dante called Elena into his study late at night, the room lit only by the amber glow of a desk lamp. He poured a glass of scotch, looking at her with a new level of intense respect. "You saved us from a massive betrayal before it could cripple our operations," Dante admitted, his deep voice carrying a rare vulnerability. "How do you see these things so clearly?"
Elena wrote her response carefully on the pad: When you cannot hear the lies people speak, you are forced to watch the truth they try to hide. Dante read the words, feeling a profound shift inside his chest. The cold, lonely isolation he had cultivated since losing his family began to thaw under the quiet, unwavering warmth of the young woman standing before him.
