Chapter 9 - The Decryption KeyTwenty minutes later, Marcus Hale stood in the center of the modern glass-walled living room, placing a heavy-duty military-grade decryption laptop onto the coffee table. Beside him stood two armed tactical guards, while Maya paced back and forth across the rug, wringing her hands in nervous exhaustion.

“The flash drive was protected by a military-grade biometric kill-switch,” Marcus explained, tapping away at the keyboard with practiced speed. “If we had used standard decryption protocols, it would have wiped the data clean instantly. Fortunately, my cybersecurity team anticipated international corporate operatives.”
A progress bar on the screen flickered green.
“Decryption complete. Accessing root directory.”
Files began to populate the screen: offshore bank transfers, encrypted wire receipts routed through the Cayman Islands, and a series of high-resolution PDF documents labeled Project Vanguard Master Plan.
I walked over to the table, leaning down to examine the files closely. My breath caught in my throat.
It wasn't just a corporate merger document. It was a comprehensive hostile takeover and physical elimination blueprint targeting Mercer Dynamics, financed by an international consortium of venture capitalists fronted by Vanessa Cole.
And right there, buried in the sub-folder titled Liabilities, was my own name—along with my private medical records, my obstetrician’s appointment schedule in Manhattan, and a detailed contract assigning a seven-figure payout for my “permanent disappearance” prior to the final merger vote.
Daniel hadn't just cheated on me with his first love. He had willingly partnered with a syndicate that had put a literal price tag on my life and our unborn child’s safety to secure his corporate throne.
The cold fury that flooded my veins burned away every lingering vestige of marital grief. There was no sadness left. There was only raw, unmitigated justice.
“Marcus,” I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. “Can we trace the originating server address of these wire transfers?”
“Already done, ma’am,” Marcus replied, a grim smile touching his lips. “The funds originated from a private Swiss bank account registered directly to Vanessa Cole. And according to our satellite telemetry, her private jet landed at Boeing Field in Seattle less than forty minutes ago.”
Maya stopped pacing, her jaw dropping open. “She flew all the way to Seattle? Herself?”
“She didn't come here to negotiate, Miss Vance,” Marcus said coldly. “She came here to clean up the loose ends that Daniel was too incompetent to tie.”

I stood up straight, resting my hands against my lower back, looking out at the dark, starry waters of Puget Sound.
“Then we aren't going to hide in a safehouse anymore,” I announced, turning to face Marcus with absolute determination in my eyes. “It’s time we set a trap of our own.”
