Chapter 8 - The Dockside IntruderThe digital display on the security console in the master bedroom flashed a sharp, amber warning light.

“Sector Four, North Dock: Unauthorized thermal signature moving inland from the water.”
My heart didn't race with blind panic; instead, every instinctual survival protocol I had learned during my years navigating high-stakes corporate espionage locked into place. I didn't scream for Maya or panic. I quietly reached down, picked up my secure encrypted satellite phone, and directly dialed Marcus Hale’s private tactical frequency.
“Marcus,” I said in a low, controlled whisper as Maya walked out of the bathroom, her eyes widening in alarm.
“General—Mrs. Mercer, I’m looking at the thermal feed right now,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the earpiece, calm and deeply professional. “A single intruder just docked a high-speed inflatable Zodiac raft beneath the boathouse. My tactical team is converging on his position right now. Lock your bedroom door and stay away from the glass.”
“How many?” I asked, keeping my eyes fixed on the moonlit path winding up from the water toward the main house.
“Just one professional operative,” Marcus replied tersely. “Wearing wet-weather tactical gear, carrying suppressed sidearms. This isn't a local thug sent by Daniel. This is a targeted hit.”
Before Maya could ask what was happening, the muffled sound of a suppressed gunshot echoed faintly from the direction of the boathouse, followed by the crisp, authoritative bark of tactical commands and the unmistakable sound of a body hitting the wooden deck.
Within ninety seconds, the secure radio crackled back to life.
“Area secure, Mrs. Mercer. The operative is neutralized and detained in cuffs,” Marcus reported. “We recovered his communications device and an encrypted flash drive. I’m sending two men upstairs to escort you and your sister to the subterranean reinforced bunker just to be safe.”

I exhaled a long, shaky breath, my hand resting gently on my stomach. The baby kicked gently, as if reassuring me she was safe.
“Bring the flash drive straight to me, Marcus,” I instructed firmly. “We’re not going to any bunker. It’s time we find out exactly what Vanessa Cole is hiding.”
