Chapter 3 - The Fractured EmpireWhile the rain continued to wash over the quiet Seattle neighborhood, three thousand miles away in Manhattan, the fifty-fifth-floor executive suite of Mercer Dynamics was descending into absolute, unadulterated chaos.

Daniel Mercer stood at the center of his pristine glass-walled office, the room looking less like a temple of corporate power and more like a crime scene. Piles of confidential financial quarterly reports, decorative glass paperweights, and shattered coffee mugs littered the imported Italian marble floor. His bespoke charcoal suit jacket was discarded over the back of his executive leather chair, his white dress shirt wrinkled, his tie loosened to reveal a throat red and pulsing with raw, unmitigated fury.
“Find her!” Daniel roared, his voice cracking with panic as he slammed his fist against the edge of his mahogany desk, sending a stack of legal injunction notices sliding across the surface.
Across the room, Marcus Vance—Daniel’s chief of security and private investigator, who was unrelated to my family despite the shared surname—stood rigidly by the door, wiping a drop of nervous sweat from his forehead.
“Mr. Mercer, we’ve checked every major airline manifesto leaving JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark last night,” Marcus reported carefully, keeping his eyes fixed on the floor to avoid catching the billionaire’s murderous glare. “There was a first-class ticket purchased under an encrypted corporate shell identity flying direct to Seattle at midnight. Passenger metadata strongly matches Mrs. Mercer.”
“Seattle?” Daniel snarled, pacing across the room like a caged panther. “Why the hell would she go to Seattle? She has no friends there! She knows no one!”
“Her younger sister, Maya, lives in a residential district in Queen Anne, sir,” Marcus added quietly.
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. His dark eyes widened as the horrifying realization set in. Claire hadn't fled like a frightened, helpless deer. She had executed a calculated, methodical extraction with the precision of a tactical military unit. She had packed her maternity bag, left her wedding ring on his pillow as a final, icy symbol of absolute rejection, and vanished into the exact geographic location where his corporate influence was weakest.
Worse still was the situation unfolding on the trading floor downstairs.
Just forty-five minutes prior, the Mercer Dynamics board of directors had held an emergency closed-door session. Without the crucial thirty-seven percent voting block controlled by my grandfather’s trust—which had been legally frozen and transferred to my independent legal counsel pending divorce proceedings—Daniel’s absolute majority had evaporated into thin air.
The stock price of Mercer Dynamics had plummeted eight point four percent within the first fifteen opening minutes of the bell, triggering automatic circuit breakers and sending institutional investors into a state of blind panic. Vanguard, their primary merger partner, had officially issued a press release suspending all acquisition talks pending a review of executive financial integrity.
All because of Vanessa.
Daniel’s mind flashed back to the black leather diary. The intimate notes, the photographs from Lake Como, the stupid, arrogant entries where he had written that Claire was completely dependent on him and would never dare to leave.
He had underestimated her. He had looked at a woman carrying his child and seen a decorative asset rather than the formidable financial mind she had actually been before he clipped her wings.
“Get my private jet prepped at Teterboro immediately,” Daniel barked, grabbing his suit jacket and shoving his phone into his pocket. “We are flying to Seattle.”

“Sir, the board has placed a travel restriction on your corporate accounts pending the embezzlement audit,” Marcus warned cautiously. “If you leave the state without judicial clearance, it will be considered flight from civil litigation.”
Daniel turned around, his face dark with a terrifying, desperate rage. “I don't give a damn about the civil litigation, Marcus! My wife has taken my unborn child, my voting shares, and my entire future! Find the jet, or you’ll be joining the legal department in the unemployment line by noon!”
