Chapter 4 - The Sister's SanctuaryBack in Seattle, the afternoon sun managed to break through the gray mist, casting a warm, golden glow across Maya’s cozy living room. I sat on the plush sectional sofa with my feet propped up on an ottoman, reading a newly printed copy of the corporate restructuring filings Evelyn had sent over via secure email, when a sharp knock sounded at the front door.

Maya paused mid-sentence while chopping vegetables in the adjoining kitchen, her knife hovering over the cutting board.
“Are we expecting anyone?” Maya asked, eyeing the front door with immediate suspicion.
“No,” I said quietly, setting my laptop down on the cushion beside me. “Nobody knows I’m here except Evelyn and you.”
Another knock echoed through the house—firm, insistent, demanding.
Maya wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked cautiously toward the entryway, peering through the peephole. A sudden gasp escaped her lips, and her hand flew to her mouth.
“Claire,” Maya whispered, her voice tight with panic. “It’s not a process server. It’s him.”
My heart skipped a beat, but the initial jolt of adrenaline quickly subsided into cold, tactical clarity. I stood up slowly, smoothing down the fabric of my loose linen dress, my hand resting protectively over my baby bump.
“Open the door, Maya,” I said evenly.
“Are you insane? He looks like a man who just survived a plane crash and is looking for someone to murder!” Maya hissed.
“He can’t break the law on my sister’s doorstep without triggering the immediate arrest warrant Evelyn filed an hour ago for harassment and asset intimidation,” I replied, my voice steady as stone. “Let him in. It’s time he learns that the rules have changed.”
Maya swallowed hard, unlocked the heavy deadbolt, and pulled the front door open.
There stood Daniel Mercer.
He looked entirely unraveled—a sight that, months ago, would have broken my heart. His expensive Italian suit was rumpled, his dark hair was tousled from running his hands through it a hundred times, and his usually composed, arrogant face was twisted in a desperate mixture of exhaustion and raw rage.
His eyes locked past Maya, immediately finding me standing by the living room sofa.
“Claire,” Daniel breathed out, taking a heavy step across the threshold before Maya physically blocked his path with her arm outstretched.
“You’re trespassing, Daniel,” Maya snapped, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed fury. “Get off my property before I call the local police.”
“Maya, stay out of this. This is between my wife and me,” Daniel snarled, his gaze never leaving my face. He took another step forward, his voice softening into a desperate, cajoling purr that he had used a thousand times to manipulate me in the past. “Claire, please... what is all of this insanity? Freezing my accounts? Filing for divorce over a ridiculous misunderstanding? You’re pregnant, you’re emotional, you’re not thinking clearly. Come home. Let’s talk about this like adults.”
I walked slowly toward the entryway, stopping three feet away from him, keeping a safe, untouchable barrier between us. I looked him dead in the eye, noting the dark circles under his eyes and the frantic twitch of his jaw.
“Emotional, Daniel?” I repeated, my voice as cold as ice water. “Is that what you wrote in your little black leather diary when you were planning to trade my grandfather’s trust for Vanessa Cole’s affection?”
Daniel flinched as if he had been physically struck. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking hollow and exposed.

“You... you found the journal,” he whispered, his voice dropping to a hoarse rasp.
“Every single word of it,” I replied calmly. “And I also found the corporate transfer documents proving you intended to liquidate my father’s legacy to bail out your mistress’s gambling debts. So don't stand in my sister’s foyer and lecture me about emotional instability. The only thing unstable here is your grip on reality.”
