Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum in the RainFor three long seconds, the foyer of Maya’s home was so quiet you could hear the soft ticking of the wall clock in the hallway. Daniel stared at me, his chest rising and falling rapidly as the last vestiges of his billionaire invincibility crumbled into dust. He realized, with absolute horror, that the woman standing before him was no longer the forgiving, gentle wife he had taken for granted.

“Claire... Vanessa meant nothing,” Daniel stammered, stepping forward with his hands raised in a placating gesture. “It was a corporate arrangement, a past life—!”

“Stop talking, Daniel,” I interrupted sharply, raising my left hand to display my bare ring finger. “Every word you speak right now just adds fuel to the fire Evelyn is using to burn your career to the ground in federal court.”

“You can’t do this to me!” Daniel finally snapped, the mask of desperate remorse shattering completely, revealing the ruthless, entitled tyrant beneath. His face flushed a dark, furious crimson. “I made you! I gave you my name, my status, my life! Without Mercer Dynamics, you are nothing!”

Before Maya could lunge forward to physically attack him for the remark, the sound of screeching tires echoed loudly from the quiet suburban street outside.

Two unmarked black sedans pulled up abruptly behind Daniel’s rented town car, their doors flying open simultaneously. Four uniformed Seattle police officers, accompanied by a local county sheriff deputy holding an official legal envelope, marched briskly up the walkway.

“Daniel Mercer?” the sheriff deputy called out, stepping onto the porch.

Daniel spun around, his eyes wide with disbelief as the deputy flashed a laminated badge.

“You are formally served with an expanded federal restraining order issued by the Manhattan District Court and the King County Superior Court,” the deputy announced clearly, handing him the thick packet of papers. “You are prohibited from coming within five hundred feet of Claire Mercer, her residence, or her family members. Any violation will result in immediate custodial arrest without bail.”

Daniel looked down at the official documents clutched in his hands, then back up at me through the open doorway. Rain began to mist down from the overcast sky, spotting the expensive fabric of his suit.

“This isn't over, Claire,” Daniel hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous, quiet threat as the police officers stepped closer to escort him off the property. “You think you’ve won, but you don't know what Vanessa and her associates are capable of. You’ve just declared war on people far more dangerous than me.”

“Let them come,” I answered steadily, my hand resting protectively over my baby. “I’m no longer hiding.”

I closed the front door firmly in his face, locking the deadbolt with a satisfying, metallic click, and turned away from the past forever.
