Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Awakening

Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Awakening in SeattleThe morning air in Seattle was crisp, smelling of damp pine needles, rich roasted coffee beans, and the wet asphalt of a gentle Pacific Northwest drizzle. Standing on the wide front porch of my sister Maya’s modest craftsman-style home in Queen Anne, wrapped in a thick wool cardigan, I watched the fog roll slowly over the distant silhouette of the Space Needle. My phone, freshly recharged and powered back on after sitting in airplane mode for six hours, began to vibrate against the wooden coffee table inside with the terrifying intensity of a small seismic event.
Missed Call: Daniel Mercer (42) Unread Messages: 89
I didn't open the chat logs. Instead, I sat across from Maya at her kitchen island while she poured me a steaming mug of organic chamomile tea, her eyes wide with a mixture of sisterly fierce protectiveness and sheer disbelief.
“Let me get this straight, Claire,” Maya said, leaning against the counter and folding her arms across her floral apron. “You were thirty-four weeks pregnant, packing baby clothes, and you casually stumbled across a secret spy diary detailing your billionaire husband’s years-long affair with his first love, complete with a plot to legally strip you of your grandfather’s trust?”
“That is an accurate summary, yes,” I murmured, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug.
“And instead of crying or throwing a lamp at his head—which, frankly, is what normal humans do—you executed a hostile financial takeover of his entire enterprise from an airport lounge at midnight?” Maya shook her head, a proud, slightly manic grin breaking across her face. “God, I love being related to you. What did Evelyn say when she served him this morning?”
As if on cue, my phone lit up with an incoming call from Evelyn Vance herself. I tapped speakerphone and placed it on the counter.
“Claire,” Evelyn’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding breathless, exhausted, and utterly triumphant. “You missed the greatest corporate bloodbath in the history of Manhattan financial courts.”
“Tell me everything, Evelyn,” I said calmly, taking a slow sip of tea.
“At precisely 8:01 AM, our process servers walked into the executive suite at Mercer Dynamics while Daniel was in the middle of a live conference call with the Vanguard board,” Evelyn reported, papers rustling in the background. “They handed him the divorce petition, the asset freezing injunctions, and the emergency trust activation notices blocking his access to the secondary voting shares.”
“How did he react?” Maya interjected eagerly.
“According to my associates, Daniel turned the exact shade of bleached paper,” Evelyn laughed dryly. “He screamed that it was a mistake, that his wife was hormonal and locked up at home, and tried to override the trust codes from his terminal. That’s when the system locked him out completely. Without your grandfather’s voting shares, Daniel’s ownership stake dropped instantly from fifty-one percent to thirty-four percent. He no longer controls the company he built his entire identity on. The board has already initiated a motion to suspend him pending an internal ethics investigation regarding the corporate funds he funneled to Vanessa Cole’s shell companies.”
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, letting the tension bleed out of my shoulders. Mercer Dynamics was the monster Daniel loved more than anything in the world—more than our marriage, more than honesty, and more than the family we were supposed to be building together. Hitting him in the boardroom was the only language a man like Daniel Mercer understood.
“And Vanessa Cole?” I asked.
“Disappeared like smoke,” Evelyn replied. “The moment her corporate credit cards were frozen by our injunctions, her luxury penthouse lease in Tribeca defaulted, and her personal assistant told reporters she booked a private jet to Zurich at dawn. Daniel has been calling my office every ninety seconds screaming for your direct phone number.”
“Don’t give it to him, Evelyn,” I instructed, my voice dropping into an unyielding register. “Tell him if he attempts to contact me directly, our next filing will include criminal wire fraud charges for the forged trust documents we uncovered in his travel cabinet.”
“Consider it done, Claire. Rest, take care of that baby, and let us handle the wolves.”

The call disconnected with a sharp click. Maya reached across the island and gently covered my hand with hers. “You did the right thing, sweetie. You and my future niece are safe here. He’ll never find you in this house.”
I looked down at my swollen belly, feeling another reassuring kick. Maya was right. For the first time in three years, I wasn't playing a character in someone else’s carefully curated corporate strategy. I was entirely the author of my own life.
