Chapter 9 - The First Strike

|
The massive, sprawling estate was completely silent, bathed in the eerie, pale glow of the full moon. Alessandro stood in the grand foyer, surrounded by twenty of his most elite, heavily armed enforcers. The heavy mahogany front doors were locked and barricaded with thick oak beams.
"They cut the hardlines," Nico reported, walking quickly down the grand staircase holding a tactical radio. "The internet is down. Cell service is jammed. We are completely isolated from the outside world."
"They want to keep the noise contained," Alessandro noted, checking the loaded magazine of his assault rifle with practiced, deadly efficiency. "Lorenzo wants to handle this quietly so the police don't intervene before he can claim the throne."
Suddenly, the massive crystal chandeliers above them flickered wildly. With a loud, electrical pop, the entire mansion plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.
The backup generators didn't kick in. Lorenzo's men had completely severed the main power grid from the outside.
"Night vision on!" Nico barked into the darkness.
The faint, eerie green glow of tactical goggles illuminated the faces of Alessandro's men. They moved into defensive positions behind the heavy marble pillars and overturned oak tables, creating a lethal kill zone in the center of the grand foyer.
Alessandro didn't wear goggles. His eyes adjusted quickly to the moonlight pouring through the tall, arched windows. He stood near the base of the staircase, a silent, terrifying guardian waiting for the wolves to breach his gates.
A deafening explosion rocked the front of the house.
The heavy mahogany doors, designed to withstand a hurricane, were violently blown completely off their hinges. Splinters of wood and chunks of burning plaster rained down into the foyer, followed by a massive, blinding cloud of thick gray smoke.
"Here they come!" a guard yelled.
Dark, heavily armed figures poured through the smoke-filled doorway, their weapons raised.
"Fire!" Alessandro roared.
The grand foyer instantly erupted into a chaotic, terrifying symphony of violence. The deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattered the expensive stained-glass windows and shredded the priceless oil paintings hanging on the walls. The air grew thick and choking with the bitter smell of sulfur and gunpowder.
Alessandro moved with brutal, terrifying precision. He didn't spray bullets blindly into the smoke. He picked his targets with the cold, calculated efficiency of an apex predator defending its den. Every time his weapon fired, a Falcone hitman dropped to the marble floor.
"Push them back!" Nico yelled, firing a heavy shotgun from behind a marble pillar, taking out two men trying to flank their position.
The initial wave of attackers was violently repelled, leaving a dozen bodies bleeding out on the expensive rugs. But Alessandro knew Lorenzo Falcone wouldn't stop with a frontal assault. This was just a bloody distraction.

"Nico, hold the foyer!" Alessandro commanded, dropping his empty magazine and slamming a fresh one into his rifle. "They are going to try and breach the side entrances to flank us! I need to secure the west wing!"
Alessandro broke away from the main firefight, sprinting down the dark, chaotic corridors of his ruined home, racing to ensure the safe room remained undiscovered.
