Chapter 1 - The White Roses Fall

|

The hands wrapped around Alessandro Vieri's lapels were small enough to vanish entirely inside his own massive palm, and they were trembling so violently he could feel the tremor traveling up his spine like an electric wire. The voice that cracked against his chest did not belong in a mafia boss's sprawling, heavily guarded foyer at dusk. It belonged to a terrified child.

"Please save my mama," the little girl cried, her tears soaking into his expensive suit. "The pretty lady said if she talks, she'll disappear. Please don't let her take my mama away."

White roses hit the polished marble floor with a soft, tragic thud. The wedding dates folded neatly inside his jacket pocket might as well have been a death warrant signed in his own blood.

He had never exchanged a single word with this little girl in his entire life. He was a man who lived in the shadows, a man who commanded obedience through fear. Yet she had run straight past his armed guards and clung to the one man in the city everyone called a monster. For the first time in years, Alessandro Vieri understood a profound truth: monsters were simply men whose promises had never been properly tested.

To understand why a child's raw terror changed absolutely everything, you have to go back exactly ten minutes. Alessandro Vieri had come home early—an almost unheard-of event in his violent world—with pristine white roses in one hand and three potential wedding dates in his pocket. He had vividly imagined Serena's beautiful smile when he asked her to choose. He had imagined lit candles, soft music, and the elegant woman in ivory silk laughing because he had finally done something romantic instead of coldly practical. The armored car had barely stopped before he was walking up the steps.

He recognized the little girl the moment she crashed into his legs. Mia. Was she Serena's? No—Mia was the daughter of Chiara Rossi, one of the household maids. She was the quiet little thing who sometimes sat near the servant hallway with crayons whenever her school closed early and her mother had absolutely no one else to watch her. Alessandro had seen her a hundred times in passing, a mere ghost in his massive home. He had never once seen the shape of her fear. Now it was pressed tightly against his chest, shaking uncontrollably in his arms.

"Mia?" He lowered his towering frame to her level, and his voice—a voice sharp enough to cut stone, a voice men emptied entire rooms for—came out shockingly soft. "What happened? Where is your mother?"

Mia looked back over her shoulder toward Serena's private suite, her lips trembling with absolute dread. "The pretty lady said if Mama talks, I will disappear forever."
