Chapter 16 - The Smoke Clears

|
Serena's finger tightened on the trigger, a manic, desperate smile stretching across her blood-spattered face. She had lost everything—her fake engagement, her secret husband, her dreams of ultimate power—but she was determined to take the king down with her.
Alessandro stared down the barrel of the gun, his muscles tense, waiting for the fatal shot. He was unarmed, his rifle lost in the rubble. He braced himself for the impact, his only thought praying that Chiara and Mia would stay hidden in the bunker.
But the gunshot didn't come from Serena's weapon.
A deafening, booming roar echoed from the doorway of the safe room behind Alessandro.
Serena’s eyes widened in sheer, absolute shock. The handgun slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering uselessly to the concrete floor. She looked down at her chest, a blossoming stain of dark red rapidly spreading across the pristine ivory silk of her ruined wedding dress.
She slowly raised her head, looking past Alessandro, her eyes locking onto the person who had just ended her life.
She collapsed backward, hitting the floor next to her dead husband, the aristocratic mask completely gone, leaving only a broken, greedy woman dying in the dark.
Alessandro spun around rapidly, fully expecting to see Nico or one of his surviving guards standing there.
Instead, he saw Chiara.
She was standing in the smoking, melted doorway of the safe room, the heavy tactical shotgun braced firmly against her shoulder, smoke curling lazily from the barrel. Her hands were shaking violently, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks, but her dark eyes were blazing with a fierce, unapologetic maternal fire. She had pulled the trigger to save the man who had saved her child.
Alessandro walked slowly toward her, his heart hammering against his ribs in profound, overwhelming awe.
He gently reached out, taking the heavy shotgun from her trembling hands and tossing it aside into the rubble. He pulled her into a desperate, crushing embrace, burying his face in her dark hair, holding her so tightly he felt her rapid heartbeat echoing against his own chest.
"You saved my life," Alessandro whispered hoarsely, kissing the side of her head, completely ignoring the blood and dirt covering them both.
Chiara sobbed, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, burying her face in his ruined tuxedo. "You promised you would come back. I couldn't let her take you away from us."
The sound of heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the staircase. Nico and five heavily armed guards rushed into the sub-basement, their tactical flashlights sweeping the corridor. They stopped dead in their tracks, taking in the scene—the bodies of Lorenzo and Serena Falcone bleeding out on the concrete, and their terrifying, untouchable boss holding a weeping maid in his arms as if she were the most precious thing in the entire world.
"Boss," Nico breathed out, lowering his weapon in sheer relief. "The estate is secure. The remaining Falcone men surrendered when they saw the explosions. The police are being diverted. We won."

Alessandro didn't let go of Chiara. He looked over her shoulder at his loyal lieutenant, his dark eyes filled with a new, profound sense of purpose.
"Burn the bodies, Nico," Alessandro ordered quietly. "And call the architects tomorrow morning. We have a lot of rebuilding to do."
