Chapter 14 - The Breach

|

The hallway outside the safe room was total chaos. Lorenzo Falcone dragged his surviving mercenary to his feet, furious that his elite men had been repelled by a single, untrained maid with a shotgun.

"You incompetent fools!" Lorenzo roared, slapping the back of the mercenary's helmet. "Throw a flashbang in there and flush her out! I want her dead!"

Serena pressed herself against the concrete wall, her triumphant smile replaced by genuine shock. The quiet, invisible servant who had scrubbed her floors was fighting back like a cornered lioness.

The mercenary unclipped a stun grenade from his tactical vest, pulled the pin, and prepared to toss it through the smoking, melted doorway of the bunker.

But before he could throw the explosive, a cold, chilling voice echoed from the dark staircase behind them.

"You are trespassing in my home, Lorenzo."

Lorenzo Falcone froze. He slowly turned around, his weapon raised, peering into the pitch-black shadows of the sub-basement stairwell.

Alessandro Vieri stepped out of the darkness.

He looked like a god of war. His tailored tuxedo was ruined, stained with the blood of dozens of men. He held an assault rifle in his hands, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute murderous rage that made even Lorenzo's seasoned mercenaries take a fearful step backward.

"Alessandro," Lorenzo sneered, trying to mask his panic with arrogant bravado. "I thought my men would have finished you off in the foyer. You always were too stubborn to die."

"You came into my house," Alessandro stated, his voice a low, vibrating baritone that sent shivers down Serena's spine. "You threatened a child under my protection. You are not going to leave this basement alive."

"Kill him!" Lorenzo shouted to his men, raising his handgun and firing blindly into the shadows.

Alessandro moved with terrifying, lethal speed. He didn't dive for cover. He advanced directly into the line of fire, his assault rifle barking in short, controlled, deadly bursts. He took down the mercenary with the flashbang before the man could even pull his trigger. The second guard dropped a second later, a bullet squarely between his eyes.

Lorenzo and Serena scrambled desperately around the corner of the concrete corridor, using the thick walls for cover as Alessandro's bullets chewed the stone to dust where they had been standing a fraction of a second earlier.

The hallway was clear.

Alessandro sprinted toward the smoking doorway of the safe room, his heart hammering with a frantic, desperate fear he had never felt before in his life.

"Chiara!" Alessandro yelled into the dark, ruined bunker. "It's me! Don't shoot!"

He stepped carefully through the melted doorway.

Chiara stood up from behind the shattered mahogany desk, the heavy shotgun still gripped tightly in her bleeding hands. When she saw Alessandro standing there, alive and relatively unharmed, the fierce warrior mask completely crumbled. She dropped the weapon, letting it clatter to the floor, and collapsed into his arms.

"You came back," she sobbed, burying her face in his ruined jacket.

"I told you I would never leave you," Alessandro whispered fiercely, holding her tightly against his chest, pressing a desperate kiss to the top of her dark hair. "I have you."
