Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

|

The revelation hit Alessandro with the force of a freight train, but years of surviving the bloody, unforgiving streets of Chicago had trained him never to panic. He stood up from the armchair, his mind already rapidly calculating the deadly logistics of the betrayal.

If Lorenzo Falcone was alive, and Serena was his wife, then the entire Vieri estate was deeply, irreparably compromised. Serena had been living in his home for over a year. She had access to his schedules, his security layouts, and his inner circle. She hadn't just been planning a murder; she had been meticulously laying the groundwork for a complete, hostile takeover of his entire criminal empire.

"Chiara," Alessandro said, his tone shifting from gentle protector to an active, commanding general preparing for war. "You and Mia cannot stay in the servant's quarters tonight. It isn't safe. If Serena had a communication device I didn't know about, Lorenzo’s men might already be moving on this house."

Chiara stood up quickly, clutching his oversized jacket around her. The fear returned to her eyes, raw and maternal. "My daughter. Where is she?"

"She is safe with my men," Alessandro assured her immediately, seeing the rising panic in her chest. "I am going to move both of you to the secure bunker beneath the east wing. It is completely impenetrable. You will stay there until I have purged this house of every single threat."

He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. It was a brief, surprisingly tender contact that sent a strange jolt of electricity through them both. "I promised Mia I would protect you. I do not break my promises."

Alessandro escorted Chiara down the grand staircase, moving with purposeful, lethal strides. The atmosphere in the mansion had completely shifted. The usual quiet elegance was gone, replaced by the chaotic, buzzing energy of armed men mobilizing for an impending siege.

In the grand foyer, Nico was standing guard over little Mia, who was sitting on a marble bench, swinging her legs nervously. When the little girl saw her mother, she let out a loud, heartbreaking cry and sprinted across the floor.

Chiara dropped to her knees, completely ignoring the pain in her damp legs, and caught her daughter in a desperate, crushing embrace. "I've got you, baby. Mama's here. I've got you."

Alessandro watched the reunion, a heavy, unfamiliar ache settling deep in his chest. He had spent his entire life building an empire of money and fear, surrounded by beautiful women who lied to him and men who wanted to kill him. Yet, looking at the fierce, unconditional love between the poor maid and her child, he realized he had absolutely nothing of true value in his life.

"Nico," Alessandro barked, shattering his own internal reflection. "Lock down the perimeter. Initiate protocol Omega. Nobody gets in or out of the gates without my direct authorization. If you see a shadow move in the treeline, put a bullet in it."

"Yes, Boss," Nico nodded grimly, racking the slide of his automatic rifle. "What about the girl and her mother?"

"They are coming with me," Alessandro said, turning toward the hidden passage behind the library. "We are going underground."
