Chapter 12 - The Huntress in Silk

|

The safe room was agonizingly quiet. The thick, reinforced steel walls completely blocked out the sounds of the violent war raging above them, but the silence only amplified the terror coursing through Chiara's veins.

She sat on the edge of the plush leather sofa, holding Mia tightly against her chest. The little girl had finally cried herself into an exhausted sleep, her small hands still clutching the gray stuffed lamb.

Chiara stroked her daughter's dark hair, her eyes constantly darting toward the heavy steel door. Alessandro had promised they were safe, but the heavy, oppressive feeling of impending doom refused to leave her stomach.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the bunker flickered and died, plunging the room into absolute, suffocating darkness for a terrifying three seconds before the backup battery engaged, bathing the room in a dim, eerie green glow.

Chiara gasped, pulling Mia closer. The power grid had been completely severed.

Then, she heard it.

A slow, deliberate scratching sound coming from the outside of the heavy steel door.

"Chiara," a sweet, mocking, venomous voice called out from the hallway. It was slightly muffled by the thick steel, but the cruel, aristocratic tone was unmistakable.

It was Serena.

Chiara stopped breathing. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She clamped a hand over Mia's ears, praying the little girl wouldn't wake up.

"I know you're in there, you pathetic little eavesdropper," Serena laughed, a dark, unhinged sound that echoed through the concrete corridor outside. "Alessandro isn't coming to save you. He's bleeding out in the foyer. Lorenzo is here. My husband is taking his city back tonight."

Chiara squeezed her eyes shut, a silent tear slipping down her pale cheek. She refused to answer. She knew if she stayed quiet, the heavy steel door would hold. It required a twelve-digit biometric code to open. Serena couldn't get in.

"You think this vault will protect you?" Serena taunted, her high heels clicking loudly against the concrete floor outside. "Lorenzo brought thermal breaching charges. We are going to melt the locking mechanism, Chiara. We are going to open this door, and I am going to make you watch what I do to your precious little daughter."

Chiara's eyes flew open. The maternal fear that had paralyzed her was instantly incinerated by a sudden, overwhelming surge of protective, primal rage.

She wasn't just a maid anymore. She was a mother trapped in a cage with a monster at the door.

Chiara gently laid the sleeping Mia down on the leather sofa, covering her with a heavy blanket. She stood up, her bare feet silent on the carpet, and walked toward the emergency supply cabinet in the corner of the bunker.

She opened the metal door. Inside, resting next to the medical kits and flashlights, was a heavy, tactical shotgun Alessandro had stored for emergencies.

Chiara had never fired a weapon in her life. But as she picked up the heavy firearm, her hands didn't shake. She pumped the slide, loading a heavy slug into the chamber with a loud, satisfying clack.

"Come and get me, you rich bitch," Chiara whispered into the green darkness.
