Chapter 7 - The Safe Room

|

The safe room beneath the east wing of the Vieri estate was not a simple, concrete panic room. It was a sprawling, subterranean luxury suite designed to sustain the mafia boss during an extended siege. It featured heavily reinforced steel walls, an independent ventilation system, and enough rations and medical supplies to last for months.

Alessandro punched a complicated, twelve-digit code into the biometric keypad and pressed his palm against the scanner. The massive steel vault door hissed open with a heavy, pneumatic sigh.

He ushered Chiara and Mia inside, the heavy door slamming shut behind them and locking automatically with a loud, definitive clack.

The room was bathed in warm, artificial light. Mia looked around the space with wide, innocent eyes, marveling at the plush leather sofas and the massive flat-screen monitors displaying various security feeds of the estate above them.

"There are dry clothes in the armoire," Alessandro told Chiara, gesturing toward a large wooden wardrobe in the corner. "Take Mia into the bathroom and change out of that wet uniform. You'll catch pneumonia."

"Thank you," Chiara whispered, her voice trembling with exhaustion and overwhelming gratitude. She grabbed her daughter's hand and hurried into the adjoining bathroom, eager to shed the cold, clinging fabric of her terrible night.

While they were gone, Alessandro walked over to the communications console. He pulled a heavy, matte-black handgun from a hidden drawer and checked the loaded magazine with practiced, deadly efficiency. He set the weapon on the table and poured himself a glass of water, trying to wash away the bitter taste of Serena's betrayal.

Ten minutes later, the bathroom door opened. Chiara emerged, wearing a pair of soft, oversized gray sweatpants and a simple white t-shirt she had found in the wardrobe. She had dried her hair with a towel, leaving it to fall in dark, messy waves around her pale face. Without the restrictive, drab maid's uniform, Alessandro was suddenly, acutely aware of just how beautiful she actually was.

Mia trailed behind her, swallowed entirely by a large, fluffy bathrobe, her small face scrubbed clean of tears.

"Are the bad men going to come down here?" Mia asked, looking up at the towering mafia boss with cautious, trusting eyes.

Alessandro knelt down, putting himself at eye level with the child once again. He offered her a gentle, reassuring smile that his enemies would have paid millions to see.

"No, little one," Alessandro promised, his voice a low, comforting rumble. "These walls are made of very thick steel. The bad men cannot reach you here. You are completely safe."

"Are you going to stay with us?" Mia asked, tilting her head.

Alessandro’s heart twisted. He looked up at Chiara, whose dark eyes were watching him with an intense, unreadable emotion.

"I have to go back upstairs," Alessandro explained softly to the child. "I have to make sure the bad men leave our home for good. But I will come back for you. That is a promise."

He stood up, grabbing the heavy handgun from the table and sliding it seamlessly into his shoulder holster. He looked at Chiara one last time.

"Lock the deadbolt from the inside after I leave," he instructed. "Do not open it for anyone but me."
