Chapter 2 - The Eavesdropper

Something inside Alessandro went entirely cold. It was not angry yet. It was just cold. The kind of absolute, freezing cold that comes immediately before lethal decisions no one can ever reverse. He gently took the child's small hands from his ruined jacket and looked up at Nico, his most trusted lieutenant and head of security.
"Keep her behind you," Alessandro commanded softly, his dark eyes fixed on the long hallway leading to the master suites.
"No!" Mia grabbed his sleeve again, her voice frantic and laced with panic. "Please don't leave my mama in there with her!"
Alessandro looked deeply into her frightened, innocent eyes. "Mia," he said her name like a solemn promise. "I am going to bring your mother out. I swear to you, no one will ever take her away from you."
She stared at him, searching his hardened, scarred face with that desperate seriousness only children possess when they are deciding whether an adult is truly safe. Then she nodded once, wiping her wet cheeks, and let Nico guide her back toward the heavy front doors. The white roses lay completely abandoned on the floor, crushed under the boots of his men. The envelope with the three wedding dates stayed tucked inside his coat like a twisted joke written by fate.
He walked down the corridor without making a single sound. His heavily armed guards followed automatically, but one sharp, subtle movement of his fingers kept them back at the edge of the hall. He did not yet know that little Mia had run blindly from fear, not necessarily toward him. He did not know that she had heard a glass tray shatter, heard her mother's choked, terrified breath, heard the vicious threat, and simply fled toward the only open light she could see in the foyer. She had not known Alessandro was entering the house at that exact moment. She had only run from a monster and collided with a man the city called one.
Alessandro reached Serena's lavish suite and stopped perfectly still outside the half-open door. He did not enter. Not yet. Men like him did not survive the mafia underworld by reacting blindly to the first thing they saw. They survived by standing in the shadows. They survived by listening closely to what people said when they thought no powerful man could hear them.

Inside the opulent room, Chiara Rossi was breathing hard. Her voice was broken, shaking with terror, but remarkably controlled for a woman facing down a syndicate heiress.
"She is a child," Chiara pleaded. "She heard nothing. Please leave her out of this."
