Chapter 16 - Healing the WoundsWith the legal nightmare finally concluded, the real work began at home.

Children do not heal overnight. For weeks after the trial, Chloe would flinch whenever someone raised their voice or dropped a plate in the kitchen. Lucas became hyper-vigilant, sleeping outside my bedroom door on a makeshift pallet of blankets to make sure nobody "came in the night."

I took a six-month leave of absence from the sheriff's department, dedicating every waking hour to my kids.

We packed up our belongings and left the suburban house in Columbus—too many dark memories lingered in those hallways. We relocated to a quiet, sun-drenched farmhouse nestled on five acres of rolling green land just outside of Athens, Ohio, surrounded by towering oak trees, fresh air, and absolute peace.

My mother stayed with us for the first three months, filling the farmhouse with the warm, comforting scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, homemade chicken soup, and unconditional love.

Slowly, the dark shadows began to lift.

One sunny Saturday afternoon in May, while I was building a wooden treehouse in the backyard, Chloe ran across the grass holding a yellow wildflower, her laughter ringing out clear and bright like silver bells.

"Daddy! Look! I found a buttercup!" she squealed, holding the flower up to my nose.

I dropped my hammer, scooped her up into my arms, and spun her around in circles as she giggled uncontrollably.

Lucas climbed down the ladder of the half-finished treehouse, grinning from ear to ear. "Can we paint it blue, Dad? Just like we planned?"

May you like

"We'll paint it any color you want, buddy," I smiled, pulling both of my children against my chest in a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

We were safe. We were whole. And the darkness would never touch them again.
